Healthcare IT Outsourcing - India Gears up to the Challenge
As far as Indian IT service providers strengthen their expertise in the healthcare domain, the outsourcing of IT services by US healthcare organizations companies is gradually gaining momentum.
We may say that outsourcing of IT services to India has a bit of history already: it dates back to the Y2K crisis and and has developed significantly since then. As of current global situation the bulk, more than 300 of the Fortune 500 companies, transfer some of their functions and business processes to India. But the healthcare industry falls behind all other industries to adopt this trend.
According to the research held by Gartner, 60 per cent of healthcare companies are expested to outsource more than half of their IT functions by 2007. Along with the growth in outsourcing of business processes, all this generates large opportunities for offshore providers dedicated to healthcare.
We can name from 15 to 20 large and midsize companies in India that render IT services to the healthcare organizations from US and Europe. More than 8,000 people are involved in healthcare informatics sector, basically serving the needs of these markets. The services rendered are quite specific for the domain: application maintenance, system integration, development of applications, reengineering and support of products, etc.
In recent time even multinationals have established their centers India and hire and contract professionals, which in turns causes salaries growth beginning from average $8,000 per year for software engineers beginners.
Some market segments grow more rapidly than IT services outsourcing: it is business process outsourcing which encompasses processing of insurance claims, payrolls management, medical transcription, billing and coding services. Some new medical branches and processes such as radiology reporting also make their stake on outsourcing and take off as well.
The healthcare industry hesitated as for outsourcing opportunities for such a long time because of the fact that many IT service providers lack the sufficient and necessary healthcare domain expertise. But Indian companies do they best to make up this weak point by hiring healthcare professionals. Besides, vendors heavily invest in building knowledge of healthcare informatics standards such as HL7. Similarly, more and more professionals in India get training in other standards and languages, such as Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM).
Opposite to common belief, that strong performers of the offshore IT and BPO markets in India adhere to HIPAA-compliant security policies and procedures, audited by HIPAA consulting companies, thus granting the confidentiality of medical records. Actually, currently the Indian government considers the opportunity of adopting data protection laws in India, and HIPAA confidentiality and security rules will be adopted with almost no changes.
This may sound quite strange, but the main concern of IT services vendors in India if they get sufficient qualified personnel to cover the increasing outsourcing demand in 3KY. Some Indian vendors already cast their glances to China to establish their centers there in order to mitigate this and other risks.
